Hyde School Accommodation & Eatery
Nestled in the charming countryside of Central Otago, New Zealand, the Hyde School B&B is more than just a place to rest; it’s a heartfelt experience crafted by Tania and her husband Ross. Situated along the Otago Central Rail Trail, the B&B is a welcoming haven for trail patrons seeking comfort, connection, and a slice of New Zealand’s rural charm.
The Journey to Hyde
Tania’s life has been a blend of corporate sharpness and rustic charm. Born in Christchurch, Tania moved to Auckland aged 10 and spent her early years immersed in city life before venturing to Northland and back again. Her professional background in finance, credit management, and consulting reflects her adaptability and drive. But it was her meeting with Ross that marked a pivotal turn. Together, they envisioned a lifestyle that blended their love for travel with a sustainable, fulfilling business.
In 2014, after searching for the perfect opportunity, they discovered the Hyde School B&B. “The minute we stepped in this driveway, this was it,” Tania recalls. It was love at first sight, and the property—originally part of the historic Central Otago Hotel business —offered the ideal vehicle for their lifestyle aspirations. The couple’s vision allowed them to split their year between running the B&B and traveling the world, a dream they’ve successfully realised for nearly a decade.
Crafting a Lifestyle Business
Tania and Ross’s approach to the B&B is rooted in balance and personal authenticity. From the start, they chose to run the business on their own terms, learning early on to navigate the competing advice of well-meaning tour operators. Tania explains, “You have to do you. It’s your business, so you run it under your own terms and conditions.”
Over the years, the couple has refined their operations to ensure sustainability and joy. They’ve scaled back to a maximum of 10 guests, operating five days a week, which allows them to maintain high standards while avoiding burnout. For Tania, the work—from cooking and gardening to managing guests—is a source of fulfilment. “The variety is great. You’re dealing with people, you’re cooking, you’re running a garden. You’ve got to be a jack of all trades and be willing to learn.”

A Modern Retreat with Character
The Hyde School B&B stands out not only for its location but also for its distinctive character. Originally refurbished by Ngaire Sutherland in 2007, the property was transformed into a modern and quirky space that retains its historical roots. Tania and Ross have since nurtured this charm, turning it into a standalone business separate from the former hotel.
Visitors are treated to more than just a comfortable bed. The couple grows their own vegetables, embracing a self-sustaining lifestyle that extends to the meals Tania lovingly prepares. Guests rave about the welcoming atmosphere, the delicious food, and the chance to experience the quiet beauty of rural New Zealand. “New people every day means you don’t get bored,” Tania says.
A Glimpse of the Future
As the couple looks to the future, they’re open to passing the torch. With Ross seeking retirement and the demands of the business ever-present, they’ve put the property on the market. Yet, their love for the community and lifestyle remains unwavering.
For now, Tania continues to embody the spirit of “corporate to gumboots,” seamlessly blending her professional acumen with her rural passions. Her story is an inspiring reminder that it’s possible to create a fulfilling lifestyle on your own terms, rooted in community, sustainability, and heartfelt hospitality.
If you’re planning a trip along the Otago Central Rail Trail, a stay at Hyde School B&B offers more than just rest—it’s an invitation to be part of Tania and Ross’s journey.
