Ecology along the trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail Trust is delighted to announce that they have yet another project, this time we are talking Ecology Projects to be completed along the trail to further add to your experience.

The Trust is proud to be supporting and partnering with local communities and local organisations to enhance the environment and ecology along the trail.

Congratulations to the Orkneys Wetlands Group which is made up of local farmers that aim to improve the water quality in the area. Great leadership has been shown as they near the completion of the QE2 wetlands near Omakau pictured above.

A viewing platform is to be built along with a gravel path providing access directly from the trail, hopefully Feb - March next year. A special thanks has to be extended to Peter and Robyn McLeod who have allowed the wetlands to be built on their farm, "Orkney."

More details to follow about further ecology projects on the Lauder Creek, Taieri River along with the plans to create further wetlands.

Plus we have the locals in the Ida Valley who have sourced funding and will be donating a lot of their time with removing all the wilding willow trees in the Poolburn Gorge, which will be replaced with native plantings. This will look great as you pedal towards the tunnels on the trail.

If you would like to contribute, you can by purchasing a Passport or making a donation, which would be appreciated.
