Otago Central Rail Trail

Wedderburn

Scroll down for Accommodation, Food & Refreshments, Things To Do and Tour Operators

Wedderburn is one of the smallest of settlements on the Otago Central Rail Trail, but even so it is big on community spirit. Thanks to Wedderburn people-power the Wedderburn Station goods shed made famous in the Grahame Sydney painting ‘July on the Maniototo’ was returned to the station site. More recently the community was able to purchase, restore and return the old station building to the station site.

Community pride most recently manifested itself in the Wedderburn Community ‘Red Barn’ Information Centre alongside the trail at the Wedderburn Lodge and Cottages. Inside you’ll find an interactive video, opportunities to go on farm tours, fishing trips and lots more.

Wedderburn had the dubious honour of being the only highway crossing on the Otago Central Railway requiring half-arm traffic barriers. This was a consequence of a high number of train-vehicle accidents. So be careful crossing State Highway 85.

Wedderburn is a handy step off point to visit St Bathans(27km) or Naseby(15km).

Wedderburn - Ranfurly

  • 14km separates Wedderburn from Ranfurly.
  • Maniototo Plains Gangers’ Shelter Shed -- one of 12 gangers’ sheds along the Rail Trail housing information panels. These sheds are identified with an ‘i’ on the map in the Official Rail Trail Passport.
  • Rail Trail passes through the big sky country of the Maniototo bordered to the north by the Hawkdun and Mt Ida Ranges, to the east by the Kakanui’s, to the south by the Rock and Pillar Ranges and to the west by South Rough Ridge and North Rough Ridge.

Wedderburn - Oturehua

  • 11km separates Oturehua from Wedderburn.
  • Trail crosses 45 degrees South Latitude twice. Look for the concrete markers.
  • Highest point on the Otago Central Rail Trail (618m above sea level).
  • Seagull Hill Gangers’ Shed… one of 12 gangers’ sheds along the Rail Trail housing information panels. These sheds are identified with an ‘i’ on the map in the Official Rail Trail Passport.
  • The trail drops down the northern foot of Rough Ridge into the Ida Valley. Great views of the Hawkdun and Ida Ranges.
