Jack's Stone Cottage is cute, comfortable and if its schist stone walls could talk, they'd tell a romantic story. Some 25 years ago Middlemarch born and bred Jack Keast scouted local farms collecting schist stone to construct a retirement cottage for he and wife Olive, who in fact helped him make the wooden island in the kitchen and lounge fireplace mantlepiece. Jack chose stone for keeping heat out during summer and keeping it in over winter. But for family reasons Jack and Olive never shifted into their cottage instead retiring to Southland where they still live.

Now owned by former Middlemarch farming couple, Janice and Bruce Harvie, the cottage they've named after its builder offers two-bedroom (queen bed and two king single beds), self-contained accommodation just a few pedal pushes (100 metres) down Cardigan Street from the Rail Trail's physical start/finish. With its attractively planted garden it's hard not to miss. Janice and Bruce aim for guests staying at Jock's Stone Cottage to have that at home feeling right the way to being able to lounge in front of the TV, watch some DVD's, do any laundry that might need washing, prepare a meal in a fully equipped kitchen and on cooler nights, cosy up to the log burner.
